ARTS FIRST Institute

Registration is now being accepted for participation in the ARTS FIRST Summer Institute 2010.

The Institute takes place at Keoneula Elementary School at 91-970 Kaileolea Drive on June 1-4, 2010, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Designed for K-5 classroom teachers, the Institute:

• Supports Hawaii Content and Performance Standards and introduces the classroom teacher to the Essential Arts Toolkit
• Allows participants to learn experientially from master artist educators
• Demonstrates how the arts can be linked to other core subjects
• Shows teachers how to develop lessons that are grade level appropriate and how to assess student learning
The Institute day consists of a morning plenary session and an afternoon studio session in a specific art form. Separate plenary sessions address the needs of new Institute participants and returning veterans who already have experienced past ARTS FIRST Institutes. For the new initiate, morning sessions will focus on using the arts as tools, defining arts integration, and the design of arts integrated lessons. For the returning veteran, the plenary will delve deeper into the definition of arts integration and the importance of essential understandings.

Studio sessions complete the rest of the Institute day. Upper elementary teachers (Grades 3-5) may choose participation in either visual arts or dance. Lower elementary teachers (Grades K-2) will be enrolled in a combination music/drama session. In addition to art making, studio sessions will include looking at and responding to arts exemplars in each specific art form.

DOE teachers can earn 3 DOE professional development credits if they implement the lessons learned and complete a learning results portfolio. Registration for PD credits is at http://pde3.k12.hi.us. The course syllabus and portfolio requirements are available at the PDE3 site.
