Arts Excellence Schools and Past Winners
The Hawai’i Alliance for Arts Education is dedicated to promoting the arts as essential to the complete education of every child. With this in mind, in 1994 we established the annual Arts Excellence Awards,
to recognize exemplary schools that teach the arts as disciplines and integrate it into other subjects. These schools:
1. Teach standards-based fine arts lessons in music, dance, visual arts, and drama;
2. Integrate the arts into other academic subjects;
3. Are supported by administration, teachers, and parents who are committed to providing arts in education.
Every year the competition rotates between elementary, middle, and high school. This year, elementary schools are invited to apply for exceptional arts programs during the 2007-08 school year.
Public and independent schools are eligible to apply. Winners will receive cash awards depending upon sales of ARTS License Plates and contributions from arts organizations. For the past 14 years, the State Foundation on Culture and Arts (SFCA) has provided $3,000 each to three public schools receiving the award. We are hopeful that the funding will be in place this year. The board of directors of the Hawai’i Arts Alliance is committed to seeking funds to continue this award.
During the Alliance's benefit/concert, Celebrate the ARTS!, on October 4, 2008, awards were presented to the principals and teachers to honor their schools’ exemplary arts education program. The monetary awards were designated to support arts programs for the students. Arts Excellence Awards were established to recognize schools that teach the arts as disciplines as well as integrate arts into other core academic subjects. In 2008, Middle Schools were invited to apply for the Arts Excellence Awards. Congratulations to the awardees and the educators who perpetuate arts in the classroom!
