SFCA & HTY PD Workshop with Maile Naehu

Hoʻoulu i ka Noʻeau: Easy Ways to Integrate Hawaiian Pedagogies into Your Lessons

  • DATE: Tuesday, Nov 3, 2026

  • TIME:  4:30 - 6:30pm

  • PLACE: Virtual (registered participants will receive the meeting link closer to the workshop date)

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This interactive two-hour workshop is designed specifically for Hawaiʻi educators who want practical, meaningful ways to weave Hawaiian pedagogies into their existing teaching practices. Participants will explore foundational Hawaiian approaches to teaching and learning—including ʻike kūpuna (ancestral knowledge), kilo (careful observation), moʻolelo (storytelling), ʻike ma ka hana (learning by doing), and place-based education—and discover how they naturally align with visual arts instruction.

Through hands-on activities, discussion, and collaborative lesson planning, educators will leave with ready-to-use strategies that can be immediately incorporated into their classrooms, regardless of grade level or prior experience with Hawaiian culture. This workshop emphasizes authentic, culturally grounded practices that deepen student engagement while honoring Hawaiʻi's unique sense of place and community.
