Kahauiki Village Afterschool Arts | Sumi-e with Kiara Womack

In this afterschool lesson, teaching artist Kiara Womack introduced students to the history, philosophy, and practice of sumi-e, traditional Japanese ink painting. Students began by learning to grind their own ink using traditional methods, engaging in a mindful, sensory experience that emphasized focus and intention. Through guided demonstrations, they explored brush techniques and mark-making, building a visual “library” of strokes. Students then combined these techniques to create their own imagery, discovering how minimal, deliberate marks can express form and meaning. The lesson highlighted the connection between artistic practice, cultural history, and mindfulness.
